Queen Anne Four-poster

Queen Anne furniture was first made at the end of the 17th Century before Queen Anne's reign. It was developed both before and after her 12-year reign and yet decades after her death the "Queen Anne" title stuck in both America and the UK. And beyond, as we in New Zealand know where it is still cherished in the 21st Century. The iconic image is the graceful curve of the cabriole leg with a pad foot ~ it is the feature which even the least knowledgeable recognise as being the quintessentially Queen Anne style icon seen on dressers, tables and chairs. In heavier furniture such as the four-poster bed the leg retains the curving shape but is shorter and heavier to suit its purpose and the plain pad foot in this iteration of the QA four-poster bed becomes the ball and claw of the eagle, whose wing span also decorates the headboard. The scallop shell and the acanthus leaf also turn up regularly in Queen Anne designs.

And so to our QA four-poster ~ it is big, bold and beautiful with superb hand-carved curved detailing counterpointing straight edges and restrained paneling both of these styles sorting themselves out around the four magnificent barley twist feature of the four posts.

Too much? Well yes ... but then again no. Essentially in its entirety it just works! While it will seldom appeal to people with a penchant for restrained simplicity (please see the Pencil Bed) the magnificence of the QA four-poster grows on you ... and grows ... and grows. Not least because whether it graces an epic bedroom or one on a much less grand scale - it owns the room! It doesn't dominate the room, the room just disappears. It draws the eye to the exclusion of all else especially if your choice of linen adds to the "all eyes on me" attraction. And, if you live at the beach (or by a lake) like me then the airy drapery of a full box mosquito net is a protective haven every summer.
Queen beds unfortunately sold out. Kings definitely available in the light finish and perhaps 1 more left in the dark. Jane will check. Price and dimensions relate to the kingsize bed.
